A sharing by Helen Chang on how this song came to be composed:
I’ve found the topic of love to be the most challenging and complex aspect of life. Because my childhood was filled with quarrels and enmity, especially at home, I got used to living an isolated existence. When I first heard of God’s love for me, I doubted it a great deal as I thought that it can’t be true since I was born into such a troubled family. It wasn’t until many years later that I was moved by His spirit to realise that, in fact, I’d been a very selfish and proud person. Though I wasn’t easy to love, I couldn’t deny that God had loved me through others around me up to then. That someone could love an unlovable person like me was a real puzzle to me. It then dawned on me that He loved me because I needed His forgiveness and salvation! I began to find that God’s love is most unlike human love in that it is selfless, doesn’t seek appreciation or reward, is not affected by outward achievements or attractions, etc.
Having been a recipient of such love, I’ve since entrusted my life to God to also be a channel of His love to those around me, in particular the needy, the weak, the discouraged, the less humanly attractive, etc., because they are the most in need of His love. But I’m also aware that I need God’s leading to know how to share His love wisely.
God’s Love can be seen most clearly in the sending of His beloved son at Christmas. Through the life and suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, we have been granted the only way possible to draw near to our Creator God. Truly most unworthy of such amazing love!
